Every trainee works closely with a class mentor throughout the three assessed teaching placements. This starts with observation of the class mentor’s practice and builds with co-planning to increase confidence. Gradually, the trainee begins to teach the class with the mentor’s support and guidance, developing responsibility and autonomy. The class mentor provides verbal and written feedback and supports the trainee to reflect on practice and set targets.
The professional mentor in school supports the class mentor and trainee and reviews the progress made throughout the placement. The trainee is also supported by SCITT leaders throughout the course.
The nature and design of the training programme encourages the building of a supportive cohort where experiences are shared and collaboration is commonplace. The support that the primary trainees offer each other is a key factor in developing confidence and resilience.
